Happy Senior Independence Month!

LiveWell Private CareThe month of February is recognized as Senior Independence Month. During this month we should focus on the significance of independence to our mature adults. The gift of living and enjoying life freely is taken for granted by majority of individuals, but turns out to be a cause of increasing concern in elderly population. While many elderly are healthy, many also deal with specific infirmity, malady, and disability obstacles. LIVEWELL Private Care helps to celebrate and encourage seniors to continue to prosper despite their aging.

It becomes more difficult to take care of yourself in the elderly years but growing in age does not have to mean loss of safety, independence and fun in life. In truth, it can be an excellent opportunity of discovery and excitement if seniors, and the families of seniors, are dedicated to putting in the effort to stay healthy. Health, both mental and physical, are essential for an independent life. This is only one of the many reasons why it is essential to celebrate Senior Independence Month at and through LIVEWELL Private Care; to help seniors sustain their independence and live happily in their own homes.

Independence can be harder to maintain for elders who have difficult living conditions, but is nonetheless still essential to achieve. While it can be challenging, challenging does not mean impossible. Senior independence is crucial to establishing the confidence and comfort seniors long for. Bringing these types of issues to public eye is what National Senior Independence Month is all about.

LIVEWELL provides the following guidelines for a better, healthier and more independent senior life:

  • Learn new skills: Learning or gaining a new skill can help you to challenge yourself to perform something in a different or unique way. This can activate your brain to produce the nutrients that protect, strengthen and grow brain cells which are observably good for your mental health. If you have never been familiar with the art of technology, now is great time to learn. Use new gadgets and devices so that you can stay connected with friends and family.
  • Get involved in arts: According to a latest research, a stimulating setting guards against certain kinds of brain damage. Moreover, senior adults who regularly take part in arts programs are healthier and do not have to take as many medicines.
  • Workout daily: Working out on a daily basis is not only healthy for certain people, but is beneficial for the everyday person and especially for elders. Day-to-day exercise could help to minimize the risk of falls, encourage blood flow and oxygen to important organs. Walk to shops rather than driving or take your dog out for walk on a daily basis.
  • Make for a safe environment: Make sure that areas that have high traffic have safe, skid resistant flooring and that hand rails are in appropriate places where they need may exist.

LiveWell Private CareTake this chance to evaluate your present living situation. Take note (literally) of the strengths and weaknesses in your everyday routine so that you can make amendments for a better lifestyle. This can be done easily on a sheet of paper divided in half with two list columns, similar to the way you might create a grocery list. Make one side the strengths within the household and daily task and the other side, weaknesses. Be sure to consider both mental and physical strengths and weaknesses when creating your list. Be patient as you note these items as it may take a few days to feel complete.

As you observe your list, what items in your weakness column can be improved? How? Make plans to start these changes working on one weakness at a time. What are the strengths? Is there anywhere else these strengths could applied throughout the home? Are there any you would like to add or try? It is a good idea to do this once a year, and of course February is a great time to do it.
